Back in the spring of 2021, Beale Street Theater held its first fully student-directed production, led by Dir. Valdez (A Stroll Down Storybook Lane). Students ages 14-18 were interviewed and chosen to assemble their production crew, cast, block, and prepare a show, all the while being provided hands-on training.
Several of our past student directors have gone on to earn degrees in theater, and two have even been awarded scholarships for their dedication and performance in the performing arts. The BST Student Director of Rapunzel, Amber Wisely, just graduated with her AA in Theater Arts! In addition, our previous student leadership has grown in confidence, leadership, creativity, and communication. This program is so important to us because it gives the incredible youth in our community an opportunity to shine.
For this year’s production, Rainbow Fish the Musical, we are thrilled to have Deacon Parker and Keegan Wilder as our student directors. Their selection was based on their unwavering dedication to the arts, their passion for learning, and their strong motivation to lead. Both student directors have already begun rehearsals with their respective casts and crews, guided by the experienced Director Valdez.
Every rehearsal has been a blast seeing these two accomplished students reach new milestones. From blocking through their first assigned scenes with their casts to collaborating with their choreographers on a dance, and preparing their costume/prop books! I couldn’t be prouder of the program we’ve built, these students are a testament to the importance of the arts.” Sidney Valdez, Director.
